2/14/2007 9:39:23 PM | Men's Basketball
Williamsburg, Va.—William & Mary held Drexel to just 33 percent shooting from the floor and defeated the Dragons, 60-47. It was the first time the Tribe defeated Drexel since the Dragons joined the CAA.
Drexel led early, 11-6, but went ice cold from the floor and was held without a point for almost a 10-minute stretch of the first half. During that time, the Tribe went on a 14-0 run to take control of the game. Drexel trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but cut the lead to five at intermission.
William & Mary never gave up the lead in the second half. They pushed the margin to as many as 15 points at one point before Drexel starting chipping away at the lead. Bashir Mason (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's) keyed the run with a pair of steals and when Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) scored on a short jumper, Drexel trailed 51-47 with 2:23 to play. After another steal by Mason, the Dragons had a chance to cut the lead to two, but Elegar missed a jumper and the Dragons were forced to foul. William & Mary made nine of its 10 free throws in the final 1:12 to seal the game.
Elegar led Drexel with 18 points, but was just 8-for-19 from the floor. Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave Military) was the only other Dragon in double figures in scoring with 10 points. Both players had nine boards. Drexel made just one of its 11 long-range attempts.
Laimis Kisielius led the Tribe with 17 points and eight rebounds. Adam Payton and Nathan Mann added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Dragons travel to Omaha, Neb., to face Creighton University in an O'Reilly's/ESPNU BracketBusters game on Saturday night at 10 p.m. EST. The game can be seen live on ESPN2. It can also be heard on WNTP 990 AM and on the web at drexeldragons.com.
